Glasgow Film Festival: What's Coming Up

Here at Morning Breath, we’ve always been fans of the good old rom-com. Indeed, if you trawl through our past episodes, we have more than one show dedicated to the genre. So back in January, with the Glasgow Film Festival fast approaching and having noted the small but perfectly formed selection of romantic comedies at last year’s festival, we decided to get in touch with them to try and put this love of all things rom-com to good use. They said yes and here we are! So let’s have a look at what’s coming up!

Love Sarah is first up and set to make hearts melt and mouths water. Revolving around a young woman who wishes to fulfil her deceased mother’s wish of opening a bakery in Notting Hill, the film stars Celia Imrie, of Calendar Girls fame, Bill Paterson, who you may recognise as Fleabag's emotionally stunted father, and the sensational cakes and pastries of Ottolenghi. This offering from first-time filmmaker Eliza Schroeder is set to be an absolute treat and can be seen at the GFT on 29 February at 18:00 and 1 March at 11:00. Maybe take some snacks to avoid complete food envy!

Next, we’re heading to Iceland (cinematically) for Pity The Lovers. As part of the festival’s ‘Iceland: Shining Northern Lights’, this film, from Swedish director Maximillian Hult, explores how two brothers struggle to maintain intimate and meaningful relationships, both with each other and romantically. Treading ‘the line between sorrow and comedy’ Pity The Lovers is set to be a potential emotional rollercoaster and can be seen at the GFT on 2 March at 18:15 and 3 March at 13:15.

Our third recommendation is James vs His Future Self. We’re both very excited about this one as it falls under Laura’s favourite genre: sci-fi rom-com. When James is visited by, yes you guessed it, his future self, he is told to give up his dream of becoming a time traveller. We'll all have to wait and see if James follows his future self's advice, but we're looking forward to this quirky Canadian offering and we feel you should be too. Catch screenings at the CCA on 4 March at 18:15 and 5 March at 13:00.

Next up in our densely packed week of movies is Eternal Beauty. Starring Sally Hawkins (and Billie bloomin’ Piper!!!) Eternal Beauty explores what happens when Jane (Hawkins), diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in her twenties, stops taking her medication. Hawkins has a sparkling resume, starring in cinematic gems such as Made In Dagenham and the slightly disturbing but Oscar-winning The Shape of Water, so we can only assume that she will deliver another stellar performance. Hop along and see this at the GFT on 4 March at 20:45 and 5 March at 16:00.

Ok, deep breath, we’re halfway through. Our fifth recommendation is Bombay Rose. This hand-painted animation comes from award-winning Indian director Gitanjali Rao. Set in the slums of Mumbai, this story of two star-crossed lovers is inspired by true events. The animation looks truly beautiful and the film has already been nominated for a multitude of awards. Get along to see this one at Cineworld (we hear potentially in the VIP screens!!) on 5 March at 18:00 and 6 March at 13:30.

At this point, we’re taking a break. We have more movies coming up, but for the sake of keeping you engaged and further content creation, we’re breaking it up a little. We’ll post again with the rest of our rom-com recommendations but, for now, be sure to follow up on our suggestions, they’re going to be good!

In the meantime, you can catch us again on Subcity Radio on 1 March at 11:00, when we will be talking all things rom-com and also chatting with director and musician Elizabeth Sankey about the upcoming screening and performance of her essay movie, Romantic Comedy.
